Herefordshire Council has accepted a new grant from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide support for vulnerable households this winter.

The DWP Household Support Fund grant of £1,329,602 will be used to support the most needy Herefordshire households, until the end of March 2023; especially those who may not be eligible for other forms of support that the government has recently made available, but who are still struggling due to the rising cost of living.

The funding will help vulnerable residents cope with rising bills for food and energy and other essential household items, and it includes emergency assistance for individuals and families in times of need.

The grant will also be used to provide food vouchers during school holidays to children eligible for free school meals.

The council continues to work with a number of partner organizations to directly provide support to vulnerable residents who are most in need of financial assistance.

Residents are invited to visit Talk Community money in mind web pages, managed by the council for more information. The site has helpful tips and tricks on how to manage your money and where to go for further assistance. It also provides information on local organizations that may be able to help with food and energy bills and essential household items.

Councilor Liz Harvey, Cabinet Member for Finance, said:

“We are really delighted to receive a new grant from the DWP and I am particularly pleased to see that the Department has given us more leeway to decide locally what people’s priorities are for support. Many of our residents have already benefited from the first round of funding, which was more restricted, and we will work with our partners to ensure that this additional support can be even more effective in reaching the most vulnerable members of our communities before ‘they reach crisis point.
